Climate groups push ministers to require data centres to source own renewables
Climate and energy groups are calling on energy ministers, ahead of a Friday 1 August 2026 meeting, to require large data centres to procure dedicated renewable energy rather than drawing from the shared grid. Why it matters: Developers and investors in large-scale renewables face a concrete near-term policy decision that determines whether data centre load growth creates contracted offtake obligations or simply adds unhedged grid demand.

AEMO raises target storage duration to 7 hours as coal exit accelerates
AEMO has indicated future battery storage projects should deliver at least 7 hours of storage capacity, rising to 8.5 hours, to cover gaps created by coal plant retirements. Why it matters: Battery storage developers and financiers face a materially higher duration requirement from AEMO when sizing projects intended to replace coal capacity in the NEM.
